I recently started reading "Ball Four" by Jim Bouton, since it came highly
recommended from a coaching friend of mine.
As a baseball fan, I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't read it before now, but better late than never, right?
If you don't know the book, Bouton was a major league pitcher, and when he wrote it in 1970 it caused quite the stir ...
It was the diary from his 1969 season, and it dished out all of the dirt and salacious stories about life behind closed doors of the big leagues.
It dispelled the notion that big league ball players were all honest, faithful-to-their-wives and sober figures who never did any wrong.
It wasn't expected to sell many copies - until players, owners, and baseball writers freaked out and started attacking it.
Then it shot up to millions of copies sold and has become one of the most popular baseball books of all time (and also made a number of "Books of the Century" lists as well)
Why is it so popular?
Bouton told it like it is, and as he said in the preface; "People simply were not used to reading the truth about professional sports"
Like the baseball world in the late 1960's, the coaching world is also yearning for some straight talk and is due for a shake up ...
And Brian Campbell is going to deliver that in a live training that we're doing on Monday.
