Over the years I've noticed that strangers direct messaging others fall into a
couple of categories:
- There are the "clueless" ones who ask "What do you do?" even though it's all over your profile.
- There are the "inappropriate" ones who ask stuff like "So, how much do you make in a year?"
- Let's not forget the "Do you currently have room to take on more clients?" ones (self-explanatory)
- Plenty of "copy and pasters" out there, who send over a wall of text with a bunch of links (usually less than a minute after you accept their friend requests)
- More rare, but growing in numbers, are the "jokesters" who open with a quirky joke to get your attention and stand out from the crowd (I know that my sense of humour isn't everyone's cup of tea, but even I've rolled my eyes at some of these joke openers ...)
- There are the "indirect" ones, who ask a bunch of inane questions as they inch towards making a pitch (related to the "Chatty Kathies" who want to go back and forth on Messenger all day long)
- Finally there are "direct" people who waste no time and instantly start with their pitch (although these unsolicited pitches can be annoying, I like them better than the indirect ones since they say what they want right away and I can choose whether to say "yes" or "no" instead of playing games ... time is money!)
If you'd like to make more sales by direct message but aren't sure how to do it without falling into one of the above categories, watch the live training that Chris Baden and Sean Malone from FlowChat are doing next week.
