Last week I got a message from a podcast host who wanted to interview me on her show.
The problem was she asked to scheduled a "pre-interview" call that was separate from the main interview, to see if I was a good fit it ... and I have a policy to not do "pre-interview" calls since they would
double the amount of time I spend overall on podcast interviews and I find them to be a waste of time in the grand scheme of things.
So I asked if she would consider combining the calls into one and chatting for a few minutes before she hit "record" on interview day, but she declined and pulled back the invitation to be on her show.
What did I do?
Well, my blood was boiling. I rolled up my sleeves and typed an angry reply (in all caps to get my point across). I yelled:
"DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!????"
I then spent 10 minutes berating her for her stupidity, so she wouldn't make the same mistake again with anyone else.
I'm kidding ...
My reply was "No problem, it's your show and your call ... all the best!" and we both went on with our day.
Although I'm not a fan of pre-interview calls, I can respect hosts who have it as part of their process - and their willingness to
enforce those boundaries.
The great thing about being a podcaster, and an entrepreneur, is you get to set the rules that make you happy.
If you want your podcast guests to wear a tootoo and sing Mariah Carey's "All I Want
For Christmas Is You" before you'll have them on your show, that's your choice (but you wouldn't want to see me in a tootoo, or have to endure me trying to hit the notes for that song ...)
In business, it helps to have a steady flow of prospects to ensure you stick to your guns and aren't tempted to loosen things up just because you're desperate for
clients.
If you'd like help on that end, check out the free training that Gabe Arnold is doing next week where he'll walk you through his B.E.S.T marketing system that keeps coaching clients rolling in.
