During the craziness of COVID times, a journalist named Brigid Delaney decided to do an experiment with Joe Rogan's podcast.
She and her friends weren't exactly fans of Rogan - they seemed terrified of the guy and made it sound like he has superhuman powers of hypnosis and can make anyone who
listens to just one of his episodes do anything he commanded!
So she challenged herself to step out of her echo chamber and listen to "The Joe Rogan Experience" for five days to see if it would "mess with her subconscious".
Her
friends were alarmed at the risk she was taking. Sure, it wasn't bungee jumping, climbing Mount Everest, or going to war, but it was pretty darned close on the danger scale! She wrote:
"I meet a friend for a walk and tell her about Rogan. She shudders and warns me not to get red-pilled. As if! I drop by another friend’s house. Nick has listened to a bit of Joe Rogan
who he describes as “a dumb person’s idea of a smart person ... I wonder if Rogan will start to mess with my subconscious. If the only voice I hear is Joe Rogan’s, what sort of person will I become?"
But as the week progressed she admitted that Rogan isn't totally evil, writing:
"Rogan himself is a good facilitator. He talks but not too much, and gives his guest a good opportunity to expand on his work. The questions are intelligent and Rogan comes across as curious and engaged"
Although she was getting into the show, on the fifth day he had a guest on that she strongly disagreed with, and
she stopped listening.
A few thoughts from her "risky" experiment:
- It's silly that things have gotten so political and polarized that it's considered being "brave" to listen to a friggin' podcast that your echo chamber
hates for a few days (by the way, Rogan has supported Bernie Sanders in the past and takes shots at both major US political parties, so it's hard to box him in politically).
- I do give her credit for stepping out and listening to his show ... every day I consume media that I don't agree with, just to get the story from multiple sides. If everyone agreed with
each other 100% of the time life would be pretty boring.
- Podcasts are "sticky"! When people find you and like your message, they'll keep listening to more episodes. While I don't think Rogan is as all-powerful as Delaney and her friends say, if you're in someone's ears consistently you have a good chance to influence them (hopefully for good, not for
evil)
