After spending all weekend helping someone move, I woke up with some realizations (and stiffness) on Monday morning.
1) I shouldn’t consider a career as a mover. Some
things were dropped and dinged - frankly, I suck at it.
2) Once you get into a state of flow, KEEP MOVING to stay in it!
About lesson #2 -> I jumped in on the first day started moving things right away. I grabbed the boxes and got into “Movin’ Mode”.
I didn’t chit chat with the others. And once I got into my flow, I was naturally going up and down stars and loading boxes onto the truck, then I rinsed and repeated.
Throughout the day, the others bugged me. I kept hearing “Geeesh take a
break, Marc”, “Stop and rest for awhile”, “What’s the rush???”
I didn’t want to do that, because I knew that once I stopped I would break that state of flow. So other than the odd chug of water, and scarfing down a sandwich, I kept moving as much as possible.
The funny things is once I hit the bed Sunday night, I was wired and didn’t get right to sleep. I was still in that flow state, hours later!
I’m the same
way with work. Once I get into doing something for business – whether it be writing, shooting videos, recording podcasts, etc I like to keep moving.
I close down Facebook and other distractions, put the horse-blinders on and keep going.
I’ve heard stats that once our stat of flow is interrupted, it takes 15 – 23 minutes to return to it (if ever). So that little bleep, ping or bloop coming from your phone/computer may seem harmless, but they can be dangerous to your business, right?
Last September I made one of the smartest moves that I made all year for my business. I turned my Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn notifications off for my phone. I’m the type of guy that when something pops up, I’m tempted to jump right on it and I was doing too much of that. Notifications were hurting my business!
Hope this helps you get into the groove!
Marc
PS: My first "Accelerate For Clients" group program for coaches started this week, and
it was a lot of fun! Since that one started, others have asked about taking it too, so I'm going to open up another one. I've got five spots, and two are already spoken for. Click here to
