I Went To The Gym (And I Didn't Die)

Published: Mon, 03/21/16

I've made no secret that I'm not a "gym guy"!

When it's nice weather outside, this isn't a big deal since I get some exercise in the fresh air ... but winter is the problem.  If I'm not careful, I'll stay in my Canadian cave and hibernate until spring!

So I got out to the gym with my brother and his girlfriend on Saturday night. I wasn't looking forward to it, but I went ...

And I'm glad that I did!

Here's what I learned from this little gym excursion that can be applied to your business:

-> Don't listen to your little voice:  It's a sneaky bugger.  Even though you know deep-down that you should be going to the gym, or writing that book that you want to get out there, or making those follow up calls to potential clients, it'll find any excuse to keep you from doing it!  Recognize the voice, and push past it.

-> Just start!: Momentum is key.  Once you start doing something - even something that you hate - you get on a roll and it'll be hard to stop you. After 90 minutes at the gym, I felt like I wanted to keep going (but didn't, since I didn't feel like going to the hospital on a Saturday night)

-> Ask for help: My brother is a real Gym-Nut, he's been into it for many years and knows his stuff.  So I asked for his help to show me the proper exercises to be doing and what machines to be using.  This made it MUCH EASIER, so don't be afraid to ask for help with whatever you want to do to shortcut the process and save yourself a lot of frustration!

-> Exercise really does clear the brain: I admit that I have trouble shutting my work-brain off on the weekends ... it's like I'm going 100 miles an hour with my brain during the week and then I try to slow down and go for a drive in the country on the weekends (it doesn't always work).  But exercising burns off extra energy and I had a great sleep Saturday night.

So there you have it - some things that I learned from my trip to the gym.  I got a membership (no, I'm not going to be one of "those" people who post 10 gym selfies every time I go), but wanted to share some thoughts that I had on it.

Have a good one!

Marc

PS: I was just interviewed as the first guest on Nicole Holland's brand new podcast, "Business Building Rockstars Show".  It was released today, and here's the link to give it a listen!
