There Are No Guarantees In Business

Published: Thu, 04/21/16

I've been on more than one call over the years where a potential client asked me if I could guarantee their success.

I recall one fellow who told me: "Marc, I'd like to start working with you ASAP, *as long as* you can guarantee that I'll be successful"

Nobody can guarantee success.

For all I know, that person likes to sleep 18 hours a day, absolutely hates people, and only wants to work 5 minutes a week ...

I'm exaggerating for effect, but you get the point.

It drives me nuts to see gurus who guarantee results, as if building a successful coaching business is as easy as following a few simple steps over a few minutes a day and voila - instant success!

I just saw something on Facebook from one such guru, and that prompted the subject of this email.

Reading his stuff, it sounds like success is easy as pie, and requires very little effort.

It's the Four-Hour Workweek mentality.  Is a four-hour workweek possible?Sure, but it's pretty difficult to pull it off in those first few formative years in business.

But there is something to be said about modelling successful businesses. I've had enough clients become successful that I know what works, and I can pass that along ...

And if you put the work in, there's a very good chance you'll be successful.

But *guarantee* it?  NOBODY can guarantee that.

Next time you see that fancy guru ad with the rented mansion, Lamborghini or boat, stop for a second and remember that!
