I read an article
recently about families and friendships being split up over the US Presidential election.
One Democrat got into it with his Republican uncle about Donald Trump, and it spilled over into a huge fight amongst 2300 of his Facebook friends.
Regardless of where you live, you're probably seeing heated exchanges online about the election (we're even seeing a lot of it in Canada, where we tend to pay more attention to US politics than
our own)
I admit it, I enjoy politics. I like to check in and see what's going on with the Presidential election ...
But I don't let it derail my business, or friendships.
I'm careful about falling into the mud over it.
So while I've been following the election, I limit the amount of time spent on it, and I don't get into anything on social media over
it.
I get that people on both sides are passionate, but imagine if people took the 5, 10, 20 or more hours a week that they spend debating the other side online, and instead put it into their businesses?
Politics can be a huge energy drain. I'm not a fan of our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - but does that mean that I laid in bed crying my eyes out the day after he won the election last fall? Did I go into a funk
or a state of depression?
No - I was too busy working on my business.
One of my Canuck clients loves Trudeau, and we still work great together (I even tease her about his love of taking selfies, and we've had some good laughs about that)
Just because you're a supporter of one side doesn't mean that you can't have a great business relationship with someone on the other
side.
Besides, have you ever seen a heated political discussion online that ended with one person saying:
"You know what, you're right! You've been right all along, how could I have been so stupid??? I'm voting for your guy!"
Be careful with the political quicksand - take the energy that you would have spent on that and pour it into your
business.
That'll make for a less awkward Thanksgiving dinner ...
Speaking of Thanksgiving, if you'd like to get more clients into your business by then, my final group coaching program of 2016 is starting in September. Here's the link to check it out:
