My friend Scott used to
own a website design company.
During a particularly rough patch for this business, he wasn't attracting many clients at all. And those who he was getting were paying him just peanuts.
You may be able to live on peanuts (for awhile), but not very well ...
In a fit of frustration, he said "Screw it!" and added a page onto his website. It read:
"Who Are My Ideal
Clients?"
On the page, he laid out who his dream clients were. He was specific, and he didn't worry about offending people.
A funny thing happened ...
He started getting better clients that matched his description!
He asked one of the women who hired him: "Why did you choose me?". She answered; "I read the page on your website, and I said to my husband -
'that's us!"
Let's face it, most people are afraid to do this. They don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.
The want to be liked by EVERYONE, and putting a page like that up could turn off some people.
But then they're often stuck with no clients, or less-than-ideal ones.
If you aren't attracting the right clients, what do you have to lose???
In
the movie The Big Short, the main character tells the viewers how he got together with his wife: He started an online dating profile, and stated that he was a student with one eye, was socially awkward, and had huge debts. His future wife appreciated his honesty, and chose to go out with him because of that ...
Now there's a lesson in brutal honestly for coaches.
If you aren't attracting your ideal clients, you may
