As much as I love
politics, I'm sick and tired of hearing about the US Presidential election (I chose not to watch the third and final Presidential debate on Wednesday night)
With every cycle, the chatter seems to start earlier and earlier.
I'm sure that after Americans vote on November 8th, the talk about the 2020 election will start up right away.
So I've decided that I'm going to quit this election ... not get involved in
petty squabbles on social media, or argue with friends, or spend any of my precious energy on it.
I'm going to follow the lead of Peter Sage, a successful coach in the UK that I had on my podcast earlier this year. I interviewed Peter around the time that the whole Brexit referendum was going on, and since it was being talked about so much I asked for his opinion on it ...
"I don't have one Marc, I've decided not to pay
attention to it"
This surprised me, but also impressed me. I'd seen so many people getting their knickers in a twist over it, and neglecting their businesses to spend time fighting with others on social media about the issue.
I know that some will argue that it's your duty to be involved with the major issues and current events, and I'm not suggesting that you completely stick your head in the sand or don't vote (I've voted in
every election that I've been able to since I turned voting age).
But I am suggesting to start paying attention to how much time and energy you're spending debating with others over political issues. Is it worth it?
A friend introduced me to a book a long time ago called How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World by Harry Browne. The older I get, the more the book resonates with me, especially when it comes to my
thoughts around government and politics. I could go on forever about the book, but Derek Sivers wrote a short blog post which sums up the ideas in it nicely:
Take a good look at the amount of time you spent arguing with strangers about politics this
week, and ask yourself if it was really worth it ...
