Quitting your day job (Jerry Maguire exit not required)

Published: Thu, 10/06/16

I've been working with a client since June, and things are going so well that this week he gave notice to his boss that he's quitting his day job to go into coaching full-time at the end of this month.

I wasn't surprised, since we do our calls at 6 am his time (PST) every Tuesday ... now THAT's a motivated client!

His energy level and mood were through the roof during our session this week, and I was almost as excited as he was about the big news ...

As cool as this was, I caution people that they shouldn't just quit their day job and jump into coaching full-time on day #1.

My client has been putting the work in and getting clients and traction. But had he quit his job on day #1, he could have ended up stressed and distracted ... unable to focus on coaching.

You don't have to pull a "Jerry Maguire exit". Remember that movie?  Maguire leaves his high-profile sports agency, rolling his sleeves up and announcing to the whole office that he's taking the gold fish with him, since he bought it.  Before leaving, he asks his colleagues:

"If anybody else wants to come with me, this moment will be the moment of something real and fun and inspiring in this godforsaken business, and we will do it together. Who’s coming with me?"

He only got one follower (a junior accountant played by Renee Zellweger) to go with him, but they fell in love - so I guess it worked out ok.

Still, that's Hollywood, and Hollywood loves happy endings.

It's not the same in real-life.

I worked at my sales gig for almost a year after starting my coaching business (roughly 11 months) ... I wanted to make sure that things were rolling with my coaching before I made the jump.

I knew that if I had to get a client on day #1, I would be under a lot of pressure and probably take on clients who weren't the right fit.

So I worked hard to build it up, and when my gut told me it was time to make the jump to full-time, I did it.

No big speeches, no grabbing gold fish from the office fish tank ...

One of my favourite parts of what I do is helping my clients build up their coaching businesses to the point where they can leave their day jobs for good ...

If you'd like me to help you do the same, book a call and we'll chat more about it:
