How often should you coach your clients?

A common debate in the coaching world is around how often coaches should have their sessions with clients (1:1 or for their groups).

There's no one right answer for this, I've seen it all:  once a week, twice a month, three times a month, monthly, etc.

When you're deciding how to structure your coaching business, it comes down to what format will let you play at the top of your game AND will give your clients the best results.

For me, I've always preferred weekly calls for both my 1:1 clients and my groups.  And preferably at the same day and time every week to get into the groove.

Why do I like weekly calls? I like to make sure my clients are staying on track. My issue with less-frequent calls is it gives the opportunity for the "Negative Nellies" in their lives (their friends, families, co-workers, neighbours, mailmen, etc) to infect them with doubt and fear.

I've seen it happen before.

I remember one client in particular whose energy was as high as it could be at the end of one of our sessions. She was ready to take on the world, and to win.

She had to reschedule the following week's call, and when we met up again in two weeks it was like night and day ...

Gone was the upbeat woman with a plan to dominate - replaced by someone who radiated worry and pessimism. She was a completely different person.

What changed? Those two weeks gave the opportunity for some of her family to infect her with their negative stuff.

I wish I could clone myself, and send each clone to stick around my clients for those times between calls. I'd give my clones baseball bats, and clear instructions to scare away the zombies of negativity that approach my clients.

Weekly calls minimizes this issue. But if I did my calls less frequently, I know it'd be a bigger issue given the longer gap of time between.

Choose what format works best for you and your clients. But consider the weekly format (it works great for me).
