A few weeks ago, I finished watching the series Cobra Kai, which
is a continuation of The Karate Kid franchise from the 80's and 90's.
Although I liked The Karate Kid back in the day, I wasn't sure if I would watch the new series. My expectation was it would be Daniel (a now older Karate Kid) training a young protege and playing the role of Mr.Miyagi to that kid.
Yawn ...
But I gave it a chance, and was pleasantly surprised by the new
series.
It's not what you'd expect. It focuses on Johnny Lawrence (the antagonist that got a crane kick to the face at the end of the original movie) trying to make a comeback in life.
He reopens the Cobra Kai dojo, and the original Karate Kid (Daniel LaRusso) tries to stop him since the bullies from the original movies were in Cobra Kai.
You'd think Daniel would be the hero of the new series, but you
find yourself rooting for Johnny, the anti-hero (and a much more interesting character than the Karate Kid, in my opinion)
It's an interesting twist, and not one that I expected. Since the series currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to the 16% that The Karate Kid, Part III got), I'd say that the show's creators made the right move with the plot.
So how can Cobra Kai be applied to
business?
Well first, entrepreneurs are never truly finished, unless they give up. They can make a comeback just like Johnny does.
Next, it doesn't hurt to mix things up and go in a different direction than people expect. I'm not saying that you change direction every day, but mix it up once in awhile.
Finally, it pays to get help from a pro. Johnny takes a bunch of kids who have little athletic ability,
and turns them into good karate fighters.
Speaking of getting help:
