Everybody needs time to think and work out
ideas.
But it's hard to get the space to do that in today's noisy world of social media dings and beeps, messages to respond to, and tasks pulling us in every direction.
I read recently that Abraham Lincoln forced himself to get away from it all to clear his head and boost his creativity.
In the darkest months of the American Civil War, Lincoln was having a hard time getting a moment to
think about possible solutions.
In particular, he wanted to find a way to free the slaves and pull the nation back together.
But whenever he was in the White House, he had a long line-up of visitors and office seekers waiting to speak with him.
In the summer of 1862, Lincoln found a solution.
He took refuge at "The Soldier's Home" - a 300 acre complex in the hills just
a few miles outside Washington (but light years away from people competing for his attention).
In "Leadership In Turbulent Times", Doris Kearns Goodwin writes:
"The Soldier's Home provided sanctuary. There, Lincoln recalled, he was able to dwell thoroughly and 'earnestly on the gravity, importance, and delicacy' of the subject of slavery ... in the tranquil setting of the Soldier's Home, he was able to resolve at last the chasm
between the constitutional protection of slavery and the moral abomination of slavey".
By forcing himself away from the usual hustle and bustle to just think and write, Lincoln found a solution (The Emancipation Proclamation) that helped end the war.
Just like Lincoln, entrepreneurs have to make room to be creative too.
One of the ways that I boosted my own creativity was to start the habit of
writing daily emails back in April 2016.
The practice allowed ideas to circulate around in my noggin, and by sending out an email every day I got better at processing those ideas and implementing them in my business and in my life.
If you write an email every day for a year, you're going to write over 100,000 words and become a much better thinker, writer, and entrepreneur because of it.
My
Daily Email System won't help you end a Civil War, but it will help you get more clients and customers with email.
